Male & Female posing

Photographing and posing males and females hold their own unique set of fun and new challenges. In my experience, females are very clear on what they do not want to look like in a photograph. No matter how fit they are, ladies always ask me “Can you make me look skinnier?” Which as a female,  I can relate to and in turn produce great headshots for my clients.

Males on the other hand, have very little to share. They usually say “ I need a headshot for (such and such) purpose” no further information provided.

I’ve been practicing male posing with my guy;  He lets me practice new male poses, but he also shares how he wants to be photographed. I am able to read his body language when he is describing the poses but I am also able to see how he takes direction when I am behind the camera.  This has helped me read his body language in different scenarios and situations. To my surprise, I have been able to read the same body language when photographing other males, which allows me to adjust accordingly.  Practice makes “perfect” and I am liking the results!

I leave you with some casual shots I took of my guy…definitely a team effort that produced great results. 🙂

Leaders traits

As a photographer, I am lucky to meet a variety of community leaders. These leaders often come from different backgrounds, but not always. However, no matter their field, one thing they all have in common is: their dedication to their community and humility.

Meet Kimberly Townsend, Author of “Lifecircle Leadership”  I photographed her for her book marketing campaign and have interacted with her in various occasions.  Something new I learned about her was that she donates one hundred percent of her book sales, a fact she does not willingly advertise.

Dinosaur exhibit coming to Syracuse!

“The exhibit will feature life-sized dinosaurs, there will be theatrical smoke and fog as patrons walk through the exhibit”  explained MOST Museum President Lauren Kochian, with great excitement!

“This makes me want to go back and teach!” exclaimed a retired middle school teacher when I shared the exciting news with her.

This exhibit amongst others give new life to the MOST Museum thirty-eight years after it first opened its doors. I still remember bringing my older kids to the museum and my daughter being able to remember every exhibit after a second run through.  Now I’m able to take my middle schooler there and she can always find something new to explore or learn more about.

The conference brought out a great crowd. Present were: Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, who shared his support for the museum and the exciting contributions its bringing to our Syracuse Community and children, J.Ryan McMahon II – County Executive and Matt Beadnell, Onondaga County comptroller.

Thank you to the MOST staff for finding new and interesting exhibits for our community to engage with – and for making it easier to find things for my middle schooler to do on the weekend!

The exhibit is scheduled to open this Summer,  July 13th and 14th.  Please visit the MOST’s website for more information.

Jim & Juli Boeheim – 20th Basket Ball

Wearing a stunning long and fitted white dress, Juli accompanied by her husband Jim Boeheim entered their very intimate VIP reception looking like Bride and Groom.

ana gil-taylor events photographer-4063_blog

They walked into a room filled with happy and beautifully dressed guests and fans.

ana gil-taylor events photographer-4064_blog

Held at the Turning Stone Hotel and Casino, Jim and Juli celebrated their twentieth year of their biggest fundraiser, The Basket Ball, socially known as #theboeheimball.  The Ball has historically net an estimated half a million dollars every year! – very impressive.  The best part is, that it all stays here, locally, to support Pediatric Cancer Research and other non-for- profit organizations who serve at risk children and youth.

I’ve been photographing the Gala for five years now; I’m always amazed at the great event The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation puts on.  Allow me to share my recap of this fun filled, for a great cause, night.

The night started with an intimate VIP reception where guests were greeted at  the “Orange Carpet” by Jim and Juli and had their photo taken with them.   Guests also enjoyed taking selfies with their favorite Syracuse Men’s basketball player.

ana gil-taylor events photographer-4086_blog

As per food and beverage?  – I saw plenty of scrumptious looking “hors d’oeuvres” circulating the room and not one, not two, but three bars fully stocked with top shelf liquor – talk about VIP!

ana gil-taylor events photographer-4116A General Reception followed.  At this reception, happy and excited guests took selfies with Jim and Juli, enjoyed having their picture taken with the entire basketball team, and again plenty of “hors d’oeuvres”  were seen circulating the wall-to wall room full of guests.

general reception_blog_ana gil-taylor.jpgOh and yes, there were two bars stocked with the same spirits!  Silent auction items are also on display for guests to delight themselves in all of the fun items available –  I wonder who won my headshot/family session?  🙂 Remember to contact me!

I have to give a shoutout to the ladies, there were so many beautiful and colorful dresses this year! The gentlemen were not too shabby either.

The Live Auction –  This part of the program is always fun – Jim and Juli are hilariously entertaining on stage.  Sean McDonough, was the emcee for the night, super funny as well.

The very lively auction closed with, Vanessa Williams who performed six of her most popular songs.

ana gil-taylor: Headshots | Hair and Makeup question

One of the first questions I get asked by my female headshots customers is; Should I have my hair and make up professionally done?

Answer: Yes.

Hair and Make-up should go hand-in-hand when investing in your headshots.  Not only will having your hair and make-up professionally done bring you an instant confidence boost, but it will also transfer to your photographer.  The way my customer’s demeanor and attitude changes after hair and make-up is incredibly fascinating and undoubtably energizing.  It allows for a bit more creativity and flexibility.

When photographing, experimenting/playing with lighting is a lot of much fun for me; I can create different moods, enhance my customer’s beauty even more, and ladies… lighting also smoothes out the face even more, by filling in shadows – Shadows create lines – not good for us ladies. The right make up application, great lighting and photographer, will return beautiful and natural looking headshots, and very little retouching to boot!

I leave you with these selfies I took with my iphone playing with my nightstand table lamp and my professionally done makeup 🙂

Oh I was feeling great; the hair was on point and so was makeup!  I had just come home from an event and was feeling it.  These were taken at 1:30a.  My make-up was professionally done, assisted by my night stand lamp as fill.  As per retouching, I applied a filter to darken the background a bit  and that made my face look a little lighter, but that was the extent of it.

In this shot the lighting is evenly distributed throughout my entire face. I love how in this shot you can see how simple but on point for me, my make up was.
I like this shot as well, you can see “hot” spots from the highlighting the MUA applied.
Here, I wanted to show contrast between my lipstick and the nails. I got really close to the light to lessen the intensity of my lipstick and positioned my hands in a way where the light wouldn’t affect it much. I was pretty happy at the way it came out. 🙂

That lamp is boss, isn’t it? 🙂

ana gil-taylor: Successful Women Business awards – recap

ana gil-taylor event photographer-1665Successful Business Women Awards (SBW), held at Embassy Suites by Hilton Syracuse Destiny,  an event which brings together community women leaders, their supporters and admirers to honor women making a difference in our community.  This year platinum sponsor was Northwestern Mutual,  Emcee, WSYR-TV NewsChannel 9, Farah Jadran, Keynote speaker was the beautiful and energetic Loretta Kaminsky,  photographer, ana gil-taylor and of course this great event was put on by BizEventz. ana gil-taylor event photographer-1666

Successful Business Women Awards have brought some great keynote speakers; I must share though, this year’s was my favorite.  Loretta is in her early 80’s, full of energy, knowledge, appreciation, respect for life and all that comes with it. She started her career in her 40’s and forty plus years later, she is still reinventing herself.  Simply, admirable, energizing and inspirational.  Honestly, if you need a dose of inspiration and laughs “Google her”  – Loretta Kaminsky.

ana gil-taylor event photographer-1653The networking aspect of the event is always fun; great women in one room, sharing stories, laughing, and connecting.   Joanne Lenweaver, WISE Women Business Center Director, Kim Townsend, Loretto’s CEO, Gwen Webber-McLeod, Gwen, Inc., Laura Serway, Laci’s Tapas, and  Onondaga County Executive, Joanie Mahoney, where in attendance amongst many others.

The food?, well as I was making my rounds around the room, I heard a couple of guests commenting:  “ oh wow, did you see this? I thought they only had the usual bagel breakfast” , “ WOW”, Here is a picture of a very happy and surprised guest.

WISE: Owera Fundraiser recap

Sponsored by KeyBank, WISE Women’s Business Center, a resource for local women entrepreneurs, held its first fundraising event on Wednesday, May 16th at Owera Vineyards in Cazenovia, NY.  Funds from this event will benefit many of the programs WISE Women’s Business Center offers which includes, business training and counseling.

Guests were greeted by the warming Joanne Lenweaver, WISE, WBC Director,  the beautifully and brightly dressed Alexandra Waterbury, WISE WBC Administrative Specialist, and Pragya Murphy, Chair of the Development Committee for WISE WBC.

Of course, since it was a wine tasting fundraising event, deliciously and refreshing looking wine awaited all of the lovely guests and their friends.

I really enjoyed photographing this event, not only because it was invigorating and motivational, but because I got to meet and reconnect with great women leaders as well as say hello some old friends.
Besides the great networking mentioned above, the live testimonials from clients had the crowd and myself excited and inspired – notice the excitement on the bartender’s face in the background as Tina Jacobs owner of Devine Gardens, in Morrisville, NY showed samples of the packaging before counseling with WISE  and after.   Debbe Titus, owner of Half Moon Bakery, in Jamesville, NY also shared how the center’s services had and still has a tremendous impact on the success of her business.
Overall, this event was not only great to photograph but very informative as I not only left excited about the awesome pictures I captured, but more educated about what WISE Women Business Center does for women in this community.  Below some  facts/statistic about the center’s impact in our CNY women’s lives and the community at large.
– Since its inception, twelve years ago, WISE Women’s Business Center has trained over 10,000 and counseled over 2,200 women in our community, which has contributed over $155 million in gross revenues.
– WISE Women’s Business Center has helped start close to two-hundred new businesses and assisted a little over one thousand existing businesses.
Organizations such as KeyBank actively support the center and this year alone, has invested over thirty-thousand dollars which allows WISE Women’s Business Center to  enrich their current services and continue offering networking events such as this one.

Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation: 19th Basket Ball recap

The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation Basket Ball, also known as #theboeheimball or the Gala, was held on Saturday, April 28th at the Turning Stone.  This was the Foundation’s 19th year holding the Ball.  With seven hundred guests and half a million dollars raised, there is no doubt their vision to help the community and its children has stayed as clear as it was when the organization first started.   The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, supports not only cancer research and advocacy, but at risk children in our community. The Basket Ball, is their main fundraising event, which over the last nineteen years, has raised seven million, it all stays here in our CNY community.  Allow me to “show you” a recap of the night….

The VIP reception, there is something about having three open bars, stocked with top shelf liquor at a very intimate reception.  Guests are greeted by Jim and Juli at the Orange Carpet, where they get the opportunity to have their pictures taken with them.  Guests get to take their picture home, the same night; not too shabby.  As if three open bars and pictures with Jim and Juli wasn’t enough, VIP guests also have the opportunity, to use those expensive phones, to take selfies with their favorite player and even chat with them; It is a very relaxing atmosphere.  The General reception, immediately follows the VIP reception and Jim and Juli are ready to meet their guests at the General reception right at 6p (this is very impressive – It is a hike, and there are not airport cars there, just saying! ) Props to the event coordinators! Ok back to the recap.

The General reception is very active, at this reception is where everyone one meets, where reporters are seen interviewing the coach, guests get the option of having their picture taken with the entire Syracuse Men’s Basketball team, they get to mingle with old friends, make new friends, check out Silent Auction items, enjoy drinks (two bars at the general reception) and hor’dorves, as well as taking selfies with Jim and Juli at the greeting area.  Can you believe that even with all of this going on, I can still find you to take your picture!? I am good, just saying! 🙂

Let’s move onto the program! LIVE Auction

As it is tradition, to fans delight, the Syracuse Men’s Basketball team shared the stage with Jim and Juli.   It was, at least to me, super cute to see the player’s shy faces as Jim, highlighted each one of them and their accomplishments this 2018 season.  A part of the night which deserves a great and heart-felt mention is the honoring of former Administrative Assistant, Kelly Seubert.   Jim and Juli shared how they will keep Kelly’s memory alive: Not only was she honored with a patch on all game uniforms, for the season, the coaching staff wearing a commemorative pin designed to look like the patch, but also donations which were made to the foundation instead of flowers (Kelly’s wish) were used to build medical supplies cabinets.

Kelly’s husband and sons.

These cabinets, which were custom built and display the letter “K”, will be stationed at hospitals and will include various supplies to make hospital’s patients stay, a bit more comfortable. Donations were also made at the live auction to keep these cabinets stocked and distributed to local hospitals.

This year’s emcee’s were Associate Head Coach, Adrian Autry and Assistant Coach, Gerry McNamara.  Live auction items included, Dinner with the Legends of SU Basketball, 2018 NBA Finals Game w/Private Charter, which auctioned off for forty-thousand dollars, and my personal favorite, a Turks & Caicos Vacation (visit link to see all live auction items: https://basketball18.auction-bid.org/microsite/items).

How cute is this!?
Adorable
Jim & Juli lighting it up with their guests

The night continued to my favorite part, dinner and dancing! It is so energizing to see couples of all ages boogie down! Prime Time Horns, owns it every year! Even Jim and Juli can’t resit the sound of those horns!   It is a great, great time. AND………. that open bar stays active until the end of the night! Just saying…

Although I have been photographing the Basket Ball for five years now, I am always surprised at how smoothly this event runs.  All transitions are seamless, from the VIP reception to dinner and dancing, to bids collection and distribution.  Shout out to Kelly Taylor, former Foundation Administrator and Rachelle Luckette, Foundation Administrator, and of course, to the volunteers for all they do to make this event run so smoothly.  It is great working with all of you!

Last but not least, Shout out to the Turning Stone Staff! It is sooo great working with them; anytime I have a question, there is always someone around to happily answer it. Love working with them as well.

Thank you so much for reading! Until next time!…, oh wait, wait… click —> For more pictures of the Gala and/or to watch a video recap by the #BoeheimBall entertainment team (Jackie Terribile, The Small Town Stylist, Nikki Poles, J Allen Inspired and myself, ana gil-taylor)
